Norwood Hospital Adds Robotic-Assisted Surgery for Total Knee Replacement

Norwood Hospital Adds Robotic-Assisted Surgery for Total Knee Replacement

Norwood Hospital to host FREE Information Session

NORWOOD MA, May 1, 2018 - Norwood Hospital has expanded is robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery program to include total knee replacement. Surgeons at Norwood Hospital have been performing Robotic-Arm Assisted surgery for partial knee and total hip replacements since 2012, having performed hundreds of surgeries to date as one of the first hospitals in Massachusetts to use the innovative Mako System by Stryker. Norwood Hospital’s Knee and Hip Replacement program has been designated a Blue Distinction+ program since 2017.

Robotic-Arm assisted surgery changed the way joint replacements are performed by providing each patient with a personalized surgical experience based on their specific diagnosis and anatomy.  Using CT-based 3D modeling of a patient’s bone anatomy, the surgeon uses the Mako System to determine the optimal implant size and alignment and to create a customized surgical plan. The robotic-arm then helps the surgeon execute the plan with precision that far exceeds that of conventional joint replacement surgery.

Total knee replacements are expected to increase significantly through 2030, yet a large majority of patients are dissatisfied with conventional surgery outcomes. The Mako System for joint replacement is designed to minimize pain and maximize outcomes for surgical patients by providing precision fitting and less-invasive surgical procedures.

“We are excited about additional advancements to our already excellent joint replacement surgery program,” says Kim Bassett, President of Norwood Hospital. “This innovative surgery has already proven highly successful for partial knee and total hip replacements, so we pleased to be able to offer yet another innovative option to our patients.”

Norwood Hospital is hosting a FREE Information session on robotic-arm assisted joint replacement for knees and hips on Wednesday, May 30th at 6pm in the Abraham Sieracki Conference Room at Norwood Hospital, 800 Washington Street, Norwood, MA.  Norwood-based Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Susan Chabot will present and answer questions.
