Norwood Hospital hosted more than 120 guests at a Senior Summit on Friday, September 20, 2013, in partnership with the Norwood Council on Aging and the office of Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey.
Guests were welcomed at the Norwood Senior Center by Executive Director Dorothy Anne Vitale, Norwood Hospital President Emily Holliman and hospital Board member and Community Benefits Advisory Chair George Usevich. Hospital Trustee Joan Jacobs was also on hand to welcome guests.
Norwood Hospital speakers included Dr. John Breda, Barbara Brierley, RPT, and Linda Davenport, RD, CDE. Dr. Breda, a Steward Medical Group primary care physician, spoke about building a long-term relationship with your physician, questions to ask your doctor and how to keep the lines of communication open. Brierley, manager of outpatient physical therapy, had the group of seniors on their feet as she demonstrated easy and safe physical exercises to help maintain strength, balance and health. Davenport, manager of the hospital's Health and Wellness Nutrition Center, talked about the importance of dietary health in overall well-being and provided simple and clever tips on good nutrition.
District Attorney Morrissey and his staff members talked about how seniors can play a role in preventing drug abuse among teenagers through improved prescription drug safety. DA Morrissey said that stolen prescription medication is being abused by teens more than any other drug on the streets and is easily obtained from medicine cabinets of family members. He cautioned safety with storing drugs and ensuring that unused prescription pain medicine is disposed of properly. Morrissey told the group of seniors that unused prescription drugs can be easily dropped off for safe disposal in specially designed kiosks at all police stations throughout Norfolk County.
