NorwoodServices & Clinical Centers

Norwood Hospital, by our history and mission, is devoted to helping individuals with a full range of psychiatric and substance abuse problems.

For individuals in crisis, Norwood Hospital's psychiatry program maintains a toll free crisis hotline, 800-331-2900. This access center will assist individuals and families in locating appropriate treatment for psychiatric and substance abuse problems. This service offers telephone assistance and face-to-face consultation and is the gateway for admission to the inpatient units or referral to appropriate outpatient care. In addition, the emergency department has mental health staff available 24 hours a day to evaluate patients in psychiatric crisis.

The inpatient psychiatry services include a 21-bed adult psychiatric inpatient unit, a 12-bed adult psychiatric inpatient unit for patients with less demanding physical needs, and a 28-bed geropsychiatric inpatient unit for those 55 or older.

Services on these newly renovated inpatient units include:

  • Individual and group therapy
  • Medication management
  • Family support and education
  • Treatment planning meetings for care providers and family
  • Comprehensive discharge planning to ease patients back into the community.

Patients on the geropsychiatric unit are cared for by a staff that is expert in caring for patients with behavioral and cognitive impairments as well as existing medical conditions. Patients have the added benefit of readily available general medical resources nearby if they need them. Comprehensive discharge planning is a service of all three units.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

At Norwood Hospital, we offer electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a well-established, accepted and effective medical procedure for the treatment of many types of mental and emotional conditions. Directed by Eugenya Alesker, MD, ECT plays an active and important role in the clinical care of many patients. Supported by exceptional anesthesia and medical services, treatments are safely conducted in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) for both inpatients and outpatients.
