Norwood Hospital has been designated a Primary Stroke Service Hospital by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. This certification requires that a hospital’s emergency department meets strict guidelines for treating individuals with stroke symptoms, including treating patients by using thrombolytics, the clot-busting drugs considered the standard of care for treating certain kinds of strokes.
A multidisciplinary team, including emergency department physicians and nurses, neurology, radiology, pharmacy, and laboratory coordinate acute stroke care. In addition, ongoing evaluations are provided by speech, occupational and physical therapy to aid in optimal recovery. Our stroke committee meets regularly to evaluate protocols for assessment and outcome review.
