Our gastroenterology division features advanced diagnostic tools in our recently renovated endoscopic suite. Over 8,000 endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopies, are performed at Norwood Hospital each year.
One of its most commonly performed endoscopic procedures, colonoscopy, is a critical screening tool for cancer and other diseases of the colon. Cancer of the colon and rectum is the third most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. The good news about colorectal cancer is that it is almost completely preventable through the use of regular screening tests. This test should be performed every 10 years beginning at age 50 and patients with a history of colon cancer in their family or certain other medical conditions may need to have a colonoscopy sooner. For information about getting a screening colonoscopy, contact your primary care physician or make an appointment with any of our gastroenterologists.
Once a diagnosis has been made, we can determine the best treatment plan. In some cases, a lifestyle alteration or diet change is all that is needed. For other conditions, we might recommend prescription medications or non-surgical treatments. And if surgery is required, Norwood Hospital's department of surgical services offers state-of-the-art technology in performing the finest cutting edge procedures in gastroenterology.
