Holy Family Hospital Clinical Pastoral Education Program

Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts, is committed to the holistic care of persons and to meeting the spiritual needs of patients, families, and staff through hospital chaplains and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) chaplain interns from diverse religious traditions.

CPE at Holy Family Hospital provides quality professional education in ministry through a learning process within a supervised clinical setting. CPE helps theological students, ordained clergy, and religious and lay ministers develop competence and confidence in their personal, professional and pastoral identities and roles. CPE supports chaplain inters in their ministerial formation and extends spiritual care and education into an integrated health care effort.

Clinical Pastoral Education at Holy Family Hospital is committed to meeting the standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE). Chaplain interns develop, deepen and integrate into practice the personal, professional and pastoral skills addressed in the objectives and outcomes of CPE that are articulated in ACPE standards.

All CPE units include at least 400 hours of supervised learning, individual learning contracts, peer group interaction, individual supervision, ministry with patients and families, and reporting and evaluating ministry encounters. CPE units also include interdisciplinary team meetings, interpersonal relations sessions, and teaching presentations. Chaplain interns lead worship, write reflections, reports and evaluations, and read in keeping with their goals. While focusing their learning on their individual goals, chaplain interns gain self-awareness, interpersonal awareness and conceptual ability, and they integrate their learning into their pastoral practice and ministry development.

Persons interested in applying to the CPE program at Holy Family Hospital should complete the “Application Form” on the ACPE website as instructed. Holy Family Hospital does not require an application fee from prospective candidates. A $100 non-refundable deposit is required to secure a position once a person is accepted into a CPE unit. This deposit will be credited toward the $800 tuition for the unit.

The Holy Family Hospital CPE Program has consistently sought to meet educational needs for ministry and chaplaincy through program development, and Holy Family Hospital offers CPE units in a variety of formats. These formats include fall and spring extended units (late August to mid-December and mid-January to late April) and an elongated extended unit from late September to late April.

  • Fall and Spring extended units meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for 16 weeks.
  • The summer unit meets on Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to noon for 11 weeks.
  • The elongated extended unit meets on Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for 20 weeks. The clinical component of this unit (ten hours each week) is determined individually with each chaplain intern.
